How to travel responsibly

At Sundowners Overland we talk a lot about responsible travel. It’s a driving vision for our business and a core part of our culture. We work with local communities and partners on the ground to design journeys that leave a positive legacy. And we will continue to look for ways to support the local environment, culture and economy in the fascinating regions we explore.

As 2017 marked the rise of anti-tourism movements in major European destinations like Barcelona, we felt it was time to remind travellers about respectful and responsible travel. We want to inspire others to get out and discover this incredible world and protect its wonders for many generations to come.

These practical tips have been devised by the UN to help make your travels more rewarding and gratifying for you, the people you meet and the places you visit.

HONOUR YOUR HOSTS AND OUR COMMON HERITAGE

• Research local customs and traditions before you arrive.
• Learn to speak a few words of the native tongue.
• Always ask before taking photographs of others.

PROTECT OUR PLANET

• Reduce your consumption of natural resources.
• Don’t purchase products or partake in activities that use endangered plants and animals.
• Don’t stray from the footpaths in protected areas.

SUPPORT THE LOCAL ECONOMY

• Buy locally-made handicrafts rather than mass-produced souvenirs.
• Think before you barter and pay a fair price.
• Don’t purchase counterfeit or illegal products.

BE AN INFORMED TRAVELLER

• Take appropriate health and safety precautions before and during your journey.
• Keep emergency and embassy contacts with you.
• Know how to access medical care and supplies if needed.

BE A RESPECTFUL TRAVELLER

• Follow laws and regulations.
• Refrain from giving money to begging children – support a community project instead.
• Bring back memories instead of cultural artefacts.
